Best Water Temperatures To Catch Marlins in Cabo San Lucas And What They Eat

Cabo San Lucas, located on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, is a world-renowned fishing destination known for its abundant marine life and stunning scenery. Three of the most prized game fish found in the region are the striped marlin, black marlin, and blue marlin. Understanding the ideal water temperature and what these fish eat is critical for any angler hoping to land one of these prized fish.

Striped marlins are typically found in tropical and subtropical waters and are most commonly caught off the coast of Cabo San Lucas between the months of November and March. During this time, the water temperatures in the region are usually in the range of 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit, which is considered to be the perfect temperature for finding striped marlins. When the water temperature is within this range, striped marlins are more active and will be more likely to chase baitfish, making them easier to catch. Striped marlins are known to congregate in large numbers during this time of year, so anglers who target this species during the winter months will have a good chance of hooking a trophy-sized fish.

Black marlins are typically found in warmer waters, and the ideal water temperature range for finding black marlins in Cabo San Lucas is between 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Black marlins are known for their incredible size and strength, and they can be found offshore throughout the year. During the summer months, when water temperatures are in the higher range, black marlins are more active and will be more likely to feed. Black marlins primarily feed on a variety of baitfish, including mackerel, bonito, and squid.

Blue marlins are also typically found in warm waters, and the ideal water temperature range for finding blue marlins in Cabo San Lucas is between 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Blue marlins are known for their incredible size and speed, and they can be found offshore throughout the year. Like black marlins, blue marlins are more active during the summer months when water temperatures are in the higher range. Blue marlins primarily feed on larger baitfish such as tuna, mackerel, and squid.

If you’re an angler looking for a reliable and accurate way to track water temperatures for fishing, SatFish is a tool you should definitely consider. SatFish is a web-based service that provides real-time satellite images and sea surface temperature data for various fishing locations around the world. In addition to water temperature and food sources, other environmental factors can also play a significant role in the behavior of marlins. Factors such as water clarity, baitfish concentrations, and ocean currents can all affect the movement patterns of marlins, and skilled anglers will need to take these factors into account when planning their fishing strategy.

Anglers looking to find marlins in Cabo San Lucas should also consider hiring a local guide or charter service with experienced captains who are familiar with the local waters and fishing conditions. These guides will have the expertise and knowledge to help anglers locate the best fishing spots and increase their chances of success.

Deep Drop Fishing Techniques in Cabo san Lucas

In Cabo San Lucas we deep drop for different species like groupers, snappers, yellowtails and striped marlin.

When we deep drop fish for striped marlins in Cabo San Lucas we usually start by locating the bait on our SIMRAD equipment. While not 100% necessary, the 3 KW elliptical AIRMAR transducer and SIMRAD NSS EVO3 made finding the fish in 150 to 300 feet deep a whole lot easier.

SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL FOR UPDATES ON WHAT IS BITING.

Striped Marlins.

This beautiful species of Marlin grow very large and strong which makes it highly popular as a game fish. They are in cabo San Lucas all year around and we usually fish for them trolling or live bait pitching but here and there the bait is at our local fishing banks like the Golden gate or the lighthouse at 150 to 300 feet deep.

When that happens we look for the bait on our SIMRAD like on the picture below.

Once we locate the bait fish usually mackerel we drop a weight with a sabiki to catch fresh bait since in Cabo San Lucas we always buy live bait from the bait guys in the morning but usually they catch it the night before and it does not look as good as the fresh one.

As soon as we catch fresh live bait we put it back into the water of course with a hook on it and the bait starts running straight down to were the rest of the bait is and usually right behind them are striped marlins feeding.

We like to use Shimano talicas 25s or 16s with 100lb test braid and 80lb test fluorocarbon leader with size 9 circle hook when targeting striped marlins since them reels are super light and strong to fight one of them acrobatic marlins.

Circle hooks – benefits and tips

Circle hooks have been shown to increase the survival of angler released fish. With their success already proven for many game fish species, these hooks are now used increasingly for many other common recreational species including bream, flathead and kingfish.

Many studies have shown that one of the most influential factors affecting the survival of fish released by anglers relates to where the fish was hooked. Specifically, survival has been shown to be greatly reduced for fish that are deeply hooked in the throat or beyond.

Benefits of circle hooks

  • Reduced deep hooking – improved survival of released fish and decreased loss of fishing tackle.
  • Improved hook-up and landing rates for many species.
  • The strike time is not as crucial for hook-up of fish.
  • Lighter leaders/traces can be used as the line is generally away from abrasive mouth surfaces.

Circle hooks bring about many benefits for anglers, but they do require a few minor changes to your normal fishing techniques.

Once you have drop the bait to the bottom were the rest of the bait is and you feel the line just taking off like crazy !

Give it about 10 seconds with a circular hook for the marlin to eat the bait than start putting drag on it slowly until the drag gets to strike position on your Shimano Talica and usually you will see a big striped marlin jumping out of the water and by them you will know that the fight its ON!

Cabo fishing report August 16th 2017.

Fishing in Cabo keeps getting better and better! Just when we thought it could’t get any better, we start catching fish in all of our local bancks.

Big game fish are even closer to shore. We have been fishing onboard smaller 20ft Pangas and 32ft fishing vessels with action right in front of the light house where we have been catching a lot of dorados and small yellowfin tunas every day.

We are also catching Stripped marlin, darado and small yellowfin tunas out of the golden gate bank. We recommend bigger boats to go out there since thats out on the pacific side and the wind has been picking up during the day.

Now, we have also been catching some big black and blue marlin 7 miles straight out from the famous arch. We can take you out their on our 32 footers unless you would like to be super comfortable, we always have bigger yachts to accommodate larger groups or anglers with expensive taste.

If you are an experienced Angler looking to get into one of the best sport fishing fights, then we highly recommend getting you all set up and taking you out into the gordo banks. This is where we have been catching many yellowfin tunas and they are all between 80 to 120 pounds, and even a few over 200 pounds here and there.

The weather is great as well, temperature in between low 80s and low 90s, and humidity is not as bad as it was a few weeks ago. The wind has been cooperating with us at 8kt in the Sea of Cortez and 11kt in on the Pacific side.

Cabo fishing report

Cabo fishing report August 10th 2017

Yesterday we went out fishing onboard our 32ft Striper with Captain Jobe Villabicencio looking for a big blue or black marlin.

Our friend Carlos Gonzales from Fairfield, California came down to Cabo to have a great time with his wife and daughter. After having spent a few days of relaxing and spending quality time with the family, he came onboard with us in search of a monster big game fish!

With the mentality of any pro fishermen, we were looking forward to get a monster fish hook. So we started the day by heading into the local inshore bank were we caught a couple of small yellowfin tunas, a decent dorado, and a couple of bonitas. After that, we headed down towards San Jose del Cabo to the gordo banks, and because the water temperature is around 85 degrees around that area, along with having heard that other anglers were catching big black marlins around that area. So we get there, started trolling a few big lures along with dead bait all the way in the back. After about an hour we get a black marlin striking one of the lures a couple of times, and then vanished back into the ocean. It definitely got our blood pumping and exited to see action around the area were we decided to fish. About 15 minutes later, a small panga fishing around the same area as us got a black marlin hooked and fought that beast for around 30 minutes before the huge black marlin won the battle and got away. Right after that we get a fast and strong strike on one of our lures. We were all happy and hoping that it was a big black marlin, and after fighting it for like 10 minutes we got to see the color. To our surprise, it was a nice big 40 pound wahoo! We were all happy especially, our friend Carlos, since he has never caught a wahoo before and it was actually the biggest fish he has ever caught.

Our weather has gotten even better. The humidity has dropped, wind has been really strong on the pacific side, but the sea of Cortez it has been just like glass.

What we are catching the most is yellowfin tuna and dorado we are catching them 2 miles of from Santa Maria bay. Marlin and wahoo are here as well, but you would have to go out 25+ miles off of shore to find them.

Fishing is great right now down here in Cabo San Lucas. If you have been thinking of fishing down here, now is the time!

We are so fortunate year around down here in Cabo. Although being considered one of (if not THE best) place to fish in the world, that doesn’t necessarily mean fishing is always as great as it is right now. If you’re looking into booking your next fishing trip, Cabo is the place to be!

Cabo fishing reports August 8th 2017

This summer just keeps getting better and better down here in Cabo San Lucas, MX.

Last month was just great as we caught black marlins, wahoos, dorados, small yellowfin tunas, with some of them being well over 200 pounds, big rooster fish, sierras and a few sail fish.

This first week of August was just as great as last month, if not even better. We fished 5 days out of the 8 in different boats within our fleet and it was great every single day.

One of the days we went out looking for black and blue marlin around the San Jaime bank. We got to the bank around 8am, and as soon as we got there we began trolling a few big luhrs, two dredges and a dead bait way in the back. After about 25 minutes, we heard the shimano reel go off, we looked back and saw a big blue marlin jumping out of the water and instantly knew the fight was on. Since we saw the hook right on the side of its mouth, my good friend Chuck Baker got on the fighting chair and fought the blue marlin for about 20 minutes, once the marlin got right to the boat we unhooked and then released it without getting it out of the water. After that first catch, we started trolling again, but a friend of ours found a dead sea turtle floating about 20 miles from us and it had a huge school of dorados feeding, so we got all the lines out of the water and headed that way. We got to the spot and just like he said, there was a big school of dorados all around the dead turtle. We started trolling live bait, but they didn’t seem to be interested too much on it so we started chumming dead bait and that really set them off. The fight was back on! At the end of the day we caught 12 dorados, released 4 of them because they were too small, and we also released the blue marlin.

The other days were just as good, and have been catching a lot of yellowfin tunas by finding the dolphins, trolling cedar plugs and flying the kite with a rubber flying fish. We have been catching and releasing plenty of striped marlin by trolling lures, dredges and dead bait and within the same areas. This same strategy has been great for catching dorados too.

The weather has been great with our highest being around the 90s and low 80s and a bit humid, but once you are out on the ocean, the breeze feels so good you’ll want to stay all day out there.

The water temperature is 78 degrees in shore and 82 degrees off shore (degrees Fahrenheit)

The wind is about 4kt to 8kt that is actually really good for fishing.

To get a better understanding on our fishing reports we strongly recommend every body to follow us on our facebook fan page since we go live on some of our charters to help you guys see exactly what we are catching at the time we catch it.

The weather has been great. A bit humid, but overall temperature-wise has steadily been around the 80s (℉)

Wind has been great around 5kt which makes the wakes nice and calm as well. The water temperature has been in the 70s (℉) in shore and 80s 5 miles off of shore.

With all this perfect fishing weather, all the big game fish such as blue, black and striped marlin have been closer to our shores and we are also catching plenty of small yellowfin tuna with a few over 100 pounds here and there. Dorados have been getting into our local banks as well in small numbers, but they are nice and big.
