For more than two decades, shrimp trawlers operating in the Gulf of California have caused severe and often overlooked damage—destroying juvenile fish, degrading vital habitats, and triggering massive “accidental depredations” that crippled the very species our region depends on for tourism, livelihoods, and cultural identity.
But 2025 marks a turning point for Los Cabos—a moment when science, community, and leadership finally come together to protect the Sea of Cortez.

A New Alliance for a Healthier Ocean
Across Los Cabos, an unprecedented coalition is rising. Grassroots captains, charter operators, conservation leaders, scientists, and local government have aligned to rebuild the marine ecosystem and reverse decades of damage.
Three key organizations stepped forward to fund and organize the first comprehensive scientific evaluation of trawling impacts:
- Noroeste Sustentable (NOS)
- Ayuntamiento de La Paz, led by Milena Quiroga
- Costa Palmas
Thanks to their leadership, Los Cabos now has the resources to hire an independent scientific team to assess the damage and create real, actionable solutions for restoring our waters.
This is no longer about opinions or politics—
real science is finally leading the way.

Science Takes the Helm
The scientific work is being spearheaded by:
Analistas Pesqueros A.C.
Biol. Víctor Manuel Valdez
Biol. Eleazar Treviño
These highly respected marine biologists specialize in fishery science, species recovery modeling, and sustainable management. Their research will provide the technical foundation our region has lacked for more than 30 years.
For the first time ever, Los Cabos will have access to data-driven insights on:
- The true ecological impact of industrial trawling
- Seasonal depredation patterns
- Declines in key forage species
- Critical areas requiring immediate protection
- Practical, enforceable conservation measures
- Long-term recovery roadmaps (10–20 years)
This is science catching up to a long-ignored crisis—and giving our community a clear path forward.
Why This Matters for Sportfishing in Los Cabos
Los Cabos is one of the world’s top sportfishing destinations. Anglers come here to chase striped marlin, dorado, tuna, wahoo, roosterfish, and more—not just for the catch, but for the entire experience: clear waters, healthy ecosystems, and vibrant marine life.
But without protection, everything we value—our business, our jobs, our traditions—would slowly disappear.
This new initiative brings hope:
1. Rebuilding Fish Populations
Protect nursery zones and fish populations rebound. That means more marlin, dorado, roosterfish, tuna, and bottom species for future generations.
2. Protecting Local Economies
Sportfishing generates exponentially more long-term revenue for Baja than industrial trawling.
Healthy seas = healthy communities.
3. Science-Backed Regulations
No more political guessing. Science-based rules ensure sustainability and fairness for all sectors.
4. A Stronger Voice for Charter Operators
Sportfishing captains and companies—people who depend on a healthy ocean—are finally being included in the decision-making process.
For companies like Tag Cabo Sportfishing, this represents the biggest opportunity in decades to safeguard the fishery we rely on.

A Community That Refuses to Stay Silent
Something powerful is happening.
Sportfishing operators, tournament directors, pangas, luxury fleets, marine researchers, business leaders, environmental organizations, and local politicians are uniting like never before.
This isn’t a trend.
This isn’t a short campaign.
This is a generational movement to protect the Sea of Cortez.
For the first time in more than 20 years, Los Cabos is building an initiative strong enough to:
- Reduce destructive fishing practices
- Restore ecological balance
- Rebuild fish populations
- Ensure our children inherit a world-class fishery
We are no longer fighting alone—we are fighting together.
A Future Worth Protecting
The Sea of Cortez, once called “the aquarium of the world” by Jacques Cousteau, still has the potential to return to its former glory.
Thanks to NOS, the Ayuntamiento de La Paz under Milena Quiroga, Costa Palma, and the dedicated scientific team at Analistas Pesqueros A.C., we now have:
- Funding
- Scientific data
- Community unity
- Political will
- A shared vision for recovery
For the entire sportfishing community—from small pangas to luxury yachts—this is the best news in decades.
Because a healthy ocean doesn’t just benefit fishermen.
It benefits everyone who calls Baja home.
