• Jigging for Structure Species: When targeting cubera snapper or grouper, I focus on areas with lots of structure, like reefs or rocky bottoms. Dropping a jig into 150-300 feet of water and feeling that unmistakable strike is pure adrenaline.

We set up just off a sandy stretch of beach known for its roosterfish activity. In the heart of Panama’s Chiriqui area lies Isla Parida, a remote and pristine island accessible only by a flight into David and a subsequent boat ride. This hidden gem, far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern life, offers an unparalleled fishing experience. I had the privilege of experiencing this firsthand, thanks to an invitation from SIMRAD representatives Alejandro Desantos and Steve Rea. Our host for this adventure was Shane Jarvis, the owner of Sport Fish Panama Island Lodge.

The Journey

Getting to Isla Parida is an adventure in itself. After landing in David, we traveled to the island, which is a stunning, isolated jungle paradise. The lodge, nestled in this serene environment, provided the perfect base for our fishing excursions. The tranquility of the island, coupled with its lush greenery, set the stage for an unforgettable experience.

The Fishing Experience

Our target was the big grade yellowfin tuna, a species known for its strength and speed. The waters around Isla Parida are teeming with marine life, making it a prime location for anglers. Over the course of four days, we employed various techniques, including the use of stick baits, poppers, and live bait. The strategy was to locate feeding frenzies and cast directly into them, a method that proved highly effective.

Stick Baits: These lures were particularly successful in enticing the tunas to strike. Their lifelike movement and appearance made them irresistible to the fish, leading to numerous hookups.

Poppers: The excitement of using poppers lies in the surface action they create. By mimicking the frantic motion of fleeing baitfish, these lures triggered explosive strikes from the yellowfin tunas.

Live Bait: For those moments when the fish were more cautious, live bait was our go-to option. The natural movement of live bait proved to be a reliable way to attract and catch the tunas.

The Highlights

Each day on the water brought new challenges and rewards. The sight of tunas boiling at the surface, the sound of lines screaming off the reels, and the thrill of battling these powerful fish created an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation. This year’s Bisbee’s Black & Blue tournament was nothing short of spectacular! From the impressive number of massive black and blue marlin caught to the nail-biting weigh-ins and the heartwarming display of community conservation efforts, the 2024 edition will be etched in Cabo San Lucas history.

The energy was palpable as 176 teams battled it out for a staggering total jackpot of $6,848,700. The action kicked off with a bang on day one, with a series of qualifying marlin (over 300 lbs) hitting the scales, each bigger than the last. Team Hooray, led by Captain Francisco Bojorquez, ultimately took the daily jackpot with a 450-pound behemoth.

Day two brought even more excitement. Team Super Neighbors landed a colossal 561-pound black marlin, snatching the lead and sending the crowd into a frenzy. But the drama didn’t stop there.

On the final day, three teams brought in massive marlin, creating an electrifying atmosphere at the weigh station. Team Damaged weighed a 420-pound blue marlin, followed by Team PLC Hookers with a 493-pound black marlin. Just when we thought it was over, local heroes Team Crudo arrived just before the deadline with a monster black marlin that had been fought for over 8 hours. The suspense was unbearable as the scales settled on an incredible 634 pounds, securing their victory and etching their names in Bisbee’s Black & Blue lore.

This year’s tournament felt different. The abundance of big fish, especially after a concerted effort by the local sportfishing community to protect our fishing banks from commercial overfishing, is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together. It’s a powerful reminder that conservation is not just about preserving the environment but also about ensuring the future of our beloved sport.

And let’s not forget the amazing technology like Catch Stat that allows fans all over the world to follow along and be a part of the live action on any big fishing tournament.

Congratulations to Team Crudo, all the winners, and the organizers of this incredible event. Here’s to hoping that with continued conservation efforts, the Bisbee’s Black & Blue tournament will continue to thrive and provide unforgettable moments for years to come.
